There are two camping areas in Italowie. The first area is on the south-western side of the gap via a small access track. This area is set amongst river red gums below a small cliff face and is a shady spot for summer. The second area is located on the north-eastern side of the gap, off the access track behind the self-registration station. These sites are set amongst wattles and river red gums near the start of the Italowie Gorge Hike. The campground is accessible to 2WD vehicles with small caravans.

SITE ACCESS
Vulkathunha – Gammon Ranges National Park is located 750km north of Adelaide and 110km from Leigh Creek. The Italowie Gap camping areas are located approximately 20 minutes from Balcanoona on the Copley-Balcanoona road.

Please note: GPS Co-Ordinates are approximate and provided in most cases to get you to the National Park entrance. Once inside the park, there should be signs of the actual campgrounds. Failing this please check with National Parks for further directions.

FEES
Camping fees from $13.50 per vehicle (max 8 people).
Camping permits can be obtained from the park headquarters or from self-registration stations at Balcanoona and on the way into most camping areas.

Many National Parks in South Australia require a Park Pass to enter. The prices for the Park Parks may vary. Read more about FEES & PARK PASSES.
Please check PARK CLOSURES prior to attending.

FACILITIES
There are no facilities at this campground.
You must take rubbish with you when you leave and ensure the area is clean for future campers.

THINGS TO DO
The stark wildness and landscape of Lake Frome is a unique feature of the park. This ephemeral salt lake stretches 100km long and 40km wide and plays an important role in the lives of the Adnyamathanha people. The ‘Plains Block’ leading out to the edge of Lake Frome still remains a traditional hunting ground. There are several hiking trails to explore the park including the Italowie Gorge Hike which takes you past Mount McKinlay Spring or the Weetootla Gorge Hike which meanders through the stunning Weetootla Gorge.

There are several tracks to explore the park and its surrounding areas by car. Most tracks are accessible by 2WD, although the Wortupa Loop Track and the track to Lake Frome require 4WDs.

RULES
The collection of firewood (either dead or alive) is prohibited.
Never camp or leave your vehicle in a creek bed or floodway, as these areas are prone to flash floods that may occur at any time of the year.
All camping areas may become isolated for up to several days after heavy rain.
Campers should be prepared to stay until creek levels have dropped and tracks have dried out enough to proceed safely.
The cultural use zone by Lake Frome is closed from 3 pm-5 am daily while hunting is being carried out.
Take rubbish home with you – if you carry it in, carry it out.
