Just 4km north of the NSW/QLD border on the Castlereagh Highway is the quaint little outback town of Hebel. The Hebel Caravan Park, situated out the back of the Hebel General Store, provides travellers with a quiet and peaceful place to stay and a great base for visiting the Culgoa Floodplain National Park.

Set on 5 acres and boasting spectacular sunrise and sunset views, the Hebel Caravan Park offers powered and unpowered camping and caravan sites as well as onsite accommodation. The Park is pet friendly and caters for tents, camper trailers, caravans, motorhomes, and big rigs.

The campsite is level with grassed and bush dirt, depending on the outback rain and there is some drive through sites available to accommodate those who don’t want to unhitch the van. There is limited shade and although the facilities are basic, they are clean and well maintained and include showers, toilets, and a twin tub for washing. If you are looking for a night out of the tent or van, why not spend a night in one of the air-conditioned motel style units.

Steeped in history, Hebel is a town that feels like time has stood still. The General Store, situated at the front of the park, is the oldest shop on the Cobb & Co route. Originally built as a dance hall in the late 1800s, it has retained much of its unique character. Rusty wheelbarrows, lawnmowers, and tables made from planks and barrels all adorn the front of the shop, while the inside is decorated with memorabilia and country style furnishings.

The General Store is also a cafe and a fully licensed restaurant that offers all day dine in and takeaway meals.  Renowned for the Hebel Big Scone and some of the best burgers you will find between Adelaide and Darwin, they also serve a variety of delicious home-cooked meals including homemade pies, fish and chips, rissoles, and veges, pizza’s, cakes and much more. Every day you can look forward to something different on the menu.

Whether you dine outside under the stars, on the veranda, or enjoy a glass of wine and a candlelit dinner in the quaint little restaurant with white tablecloths and flowers on the tables, you are sure to remember your outback dining experience.

For any basic needs, the store, which is also the town’s post office, is well stocked with ice, bread, milk, ice creams, chips, shampoos, soaps and other essentials.

HOW TO GET THERE
Just north of the NSW/QLD border when travelling between St George/Dirranbandi and Lightning Ridge. The store is on the right if coming from NSW just before the highway takes a 90 degree right; similarly, it is on the left just after turning left from the QLD side.

SITE ACCESS
The entrance is directly off the Castlereagh Highway on the bend. There is plenty of room in front and on the side to pull over and let them know you have arrived.

FEES & BOOKINGS
Fees from $10/night for Unpowered Sites, $20/night for Powered Sites up to 2 persons.

THINGS TO DO
There is a park with a playground for the kids within a short 150m walk from the park or you can spend the afternoon fishing or setting the yabby pots in the Bokhara River, just a stone’s throw from the main street.
