Looking for a great stop over off the Gunbarrel Highway?

Gunbarrel Laager Travellers’ Rest is a pet-friendly park about 12 km east of Wiluna in central Western Australia. With breakfast and dinner available daily and a choice of camping, caravan, and onsite accommodation, Gunbarrel Laager is the ideal stopover for travellers before or after a trip along the Canning Stock Route or the Gunbarrel Highway.

The park offers powered and unpowered camping and caravan sites suitable for anything from tents to big rigs. If you need a powered or drive-through site, booking is essential as these are limited. There are plenty of spots to park up in the sun and use your solar and if you want shade there is some amongst the mulga trees. The water at the park is bore and it is drinkable but if you prefer you can byo. Fires are permitted in the onsite fire pits and some wood is provided, or you may choose to sit around the communal fire pit and chat with other travellers.

Facilities include a kiosk with basic groceries, drinks, ice-creams, souvenirs, and maps. There is a large camp kitchen which is decked out with a stove, microwave and barbecue as well as tables and chairs. For entertainment, there’s a TV room that also has games and jigsaws. There is a central ablution block that is shared by campers and those staying in the on-site rooms; the rooms do not have ensuites.

For those without their own accommodation, there are donga-style rooms that can sleep from one to four people. Single rooms all have king single beds, while couples can choose a room with a queen-size bed. There are also family or twin rooms which contain a queen bed and one or two singles. All rooms have air conditioning, fridge, and facilities for making tea and coffee, and linen is provided.

If you’re tired of cooking for yourself, Gunbarrel Laager Travellers’ Rest has a dining room where you can get breakfast and dinner daily as well as a packed lunch. Bookings are required for morning and evening meals.

Caravan and vehicle storage is available if you need to leave them for any reason, and an airport pick up and drop off service is also offered.

Wiluna has limited facilities, however, the local store sells all the basic essentials including fresh fruit and vegetables, cryovac meats, dairy products, fuel (diesel and unleaded) and gas bottle refills, as well as camping gear and outdoor accessories. The town also has a swimming pool and police station.

THINGS TO DO
Shire of Wiluna/Canning-Gunbarrel Discovery Centre
The Discovery Centre has a range of tourist information and souvenirs and is home to the Tjukurba Art Gallery. The Gallery hosts a display of paintings by Wiluna’s Indigenous artists as well as historic photos. Visitors may also have the opportunity to meet artists painting on-site and view original artworks that are for sale.

Red Hill Lookout
Located about 1 km south of Wiluna, this lookout provides views of the current town as well as the original site of Wiluna and the goldmine to the east. Along the way out you can see the ruins of the old railway station and shed.

Clay Pans
The Clay Pans fill with water in the wet season and are ideal for birdwatching, canoeing, and picnics.

Canning Stock Route
Extending for 1850 km between Wiluna and Halls Creek, Canning Stock Route is one of Australia’s most challenging outback adventures. There are wells along the way for water, but you’ll need to plan your trip and be self-sufficient. The first well is only about 10 km from Wiluna if you just want to try a short section of the track, and there are other entry/exit points along the track also. Permits are required, as the track passes through Aboriginal land.

Gunbarrel Highway
Another challenging 4WD track is the Gunbarrel Highway, which stretches from Carnegie to Yulara. Once again, permits are required.
