Tucked away above the serene Genoa River, the old caravan park turned campsite, now known simply as the Genoa Rest Area, offers a tranquil retreat for travelers and campers alike. This location, stripped of its former caravan park status, has embraced a more rustic charm. With the disconnection of power, the site has been repurposed, featuring a tennis court for recreation. Campers can indulge in the comfort of mature gum trees providing ample shade, perfect for those seeking respite from the sun’s embrace.

The secluded spots to the north, near the tennis court, afford magnificent views over the river, allowing for moments of contemplation and connection with nature. The picnic tables, barbecues, and toilets retain a semblance of modern convenience amidst the natural setting. Perhaps the site’s most picturesque feature is the old timber bridge that arches over the Genoa River, now serving as a pedestrian pathway and vantage point for panoramic river views.

This camping area is a blend of simplicity and natural beauty, a rare find in today’s fast-paced world. It invites campers to unwind in the grassy open areas, where the only sounds are the whispers of nature and the occasional chatter of like-minded, friendly campers. The donation-based upkeep ensures the site remains accessible to all, cementing its status as a beloved stopover for those journeying along the Princes Highway.

HOW TO GET THERE
Nestled just off the Princes Highway, the Genoa Rest Area is a convenient detour for those heading to or from Mallacoota. Approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Mallacoota turnoff, this hidden gem can be accessed via a sealed road, suitable for both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles. The entrance to this riverside sanctuary is clearly marked, and a short drive down the access road reveals the welcoming expanse of the campground.

FEES & BOOKINGS
A spirit of community underpins the Genoa Rest Area, where a modest donation is encouraged to maintain the site’s facilities. While there are no booking requirements, as it operates on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, campers are invited to contribute to the upkeep via a donation box located near the toilets.

We camp here on our way to NT. Toilets are clean and well maintained. Showers not working, but thats no big deal. Rubbish bins available and flat grass areas for tents or camper trailers like mine. Definitely recommend this site and well worth to stay a night or two for a good donation.

can certainly recommend this site. I camped, small tent. Flat and grassed. toilets were clean and the lady came to clean and restock while I was packing up. Showers are not working possibly due to vandals! so had a strip wash, not a big deal.
