On the Arnhem Highway just an hour southeast of Darwin’s CBD and about halfway to the awesome escarpments of Kakadu, the Corroboree Tavern makes a great stopover for a few hours or a few days. In the heart of the wetlands, with the Adelaide River to the west and Mary River to the east, you’ll find not only a comfortable campsite but all the flora and fauna of the area here, including up to 280 species of birds on your doorstep. There is even a resident ‘pet’ croc called Brutus – I think he has a separate pool all to himself and doesn’t need to use the camper’s, but might be worth it to check, hey?
The tavern is open and serves meals seven days a week. Groceries, fuel, and take-away alcohol are also available, so you’ll be able to top up and stock up while you stay.
Set on 300 acres of shady, level ground, there are plenty of secluded sites to choose from where you won’t be on top of the neighbours, whether you are in a tent, trailer, motorhome, or big rig. Access from either side of the tavern is suitable for all types of setup. There are powered sites available or you can just choose a secluded spot and spread out. Wood-fired bar-b-q’s and fire pits are dotted around the campground. All campers have access to the ablutions block and laundry facilities.
The on-site accommodation ranges from their top-end style ‘Nurses Quarters’ – dorm style with shared bathroom but separate bedrooms – to their premium cabins, which are fully self-contained.
No top-end stay would be complete without knowing whether there is barra about. The answer is yes, yes, and yes. There are numerous choices of organised wetlands tours or you can enjoy boating on the picturesque Corroboree Billabong or hooking a barra at Shady Camp, as well as walking trails throughout the park and surrounding National Parks. Just be sure to get some local knowledge about where you are intending to go before you head out.
Well-behaved pets and owners are welcome, with the usual common sense and courtesy guidelines applying of course.
