Cooper Creek Windorah Campground: A Peaceful Getaway in Queensland

The famous Cooper’s Creek is located just 10km east of Windorah. Here you will find plenty of free camping sites, set amongst the shady river red gums.  There are no facilities on-site other than toilets provided on the eastern bank of the creek as well as some waste bins.  You might want to bring your own firewood. Showers are available at the caravan park for a Gold coin donation, and the dump point is located on the edge of town before you get to Cecil Street.

Fishing, bird watching, and relaxing are all great ways to pass the time while camping at Cooper’s Creek.

Windorah has all the required facilities to make your stay enjoyable, fuel, groceries, hotel, airport, museum, information centre.

Cracker of a location. Stayed on South West Bank and found a spot with a bit of shade (could have had more but needed the sun for solar panels). Watch out for the flies. They are VERY friendly and VERY sticky. Temperature is Hot (over 34 degrees in the day and down to 23 at night. 2 bars 3g for Telstra, boosted to 2 bars 4g with Celfi. Toilets, bins, no water.

Overall

Camped here early September last year, on southwestern side of Coopers Creek below the bridge. Luckily not too many campers around so was able to score a fantastic spot. Windorah is a great location, Visitors Centre staffed by a lovely lady who promotes area very well. Museum next to Visitors Centre definitely worth a look as are the Solar Farm, beaut pub, the parkland with flyscreened shelter, the Mosaic garden, Native Garden drive, the Old Courthouse and Sando’s sandhill a couple of K’s out of town on the road to Birdsville/Bedourie. With a permanent population of about 80, there is no supermarket but both the servo and the Outback store carry enough to stock up food supplies. Fuel pricing at the servo in Windorah was reasonable.
Stayed here a week, could have been longer but the weather started to turn a bit feral.
