The Broken Hill Racecourse Campground is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for somewhere that can accommodate your large RV. They have an area just for RVs, and even offer horse and stable facilities so you can bring your horses along with you.

The campground is located just outside Broken Hill. The grassy site is nice and quiet with clean amenities and is suitable for caravans, motorhomes, camper trailers, and big rigs. It is advisable to check before arrival due to the limited camping area during events.

HOW TO GET THERE
Head North from Broken Hill centre onto the Silver City Highway (Milparnka & Tibooburra) and just out of town, as the highway is about to take a right-hand curve, bear left into Racecourse Road.  The entrance is on the right after 1.7km.

FEES & BOOKINGS
Fee is $25 per night for unpowered site and $35 per night for powered site.
Onsite Caretaker and bookings are advisable as numbers are limited.

Living Museum
The Albert Kersten Mining & Minerals Museum is home to the iconic ‘Silver Tree’ once owned by Charles Rasp, the boundary rider who pegged out the first Broken Hill mining lease with his partners. The museum occupies the beautifully restored former Bond Store, made from locally quarried stone in 1892, It presents information on the formation of the world’s largest deposit of silver-lead and zinc, as well as a world-class display of Broken Hill minerals.

Another must-see museum in the centre of town is the Sulphide Street Railway and Historical Museum, located diagonally opposite the Visitor Information Centre. This is actually more than four museums for the price of one: the Broken Hill Migrant Museum, the Hospital Museum, the Ron Carter Transport Pavilion, and the Triple Chance Mineral Collection. It is also home to a range of railway attractions, including the Silver City Comet and a selection of restored gems from the Silverton Tramway Company.

Or experience Broken Hill’s diverse cultural influences by visiting the city’s synagogue. This place of worship welcomes visitors and its museum offers a unique perspective on the richness of life in the outback. The Synagogue Museum is open every Wednesday from 10am to 4pm.

And in nearby Silverton, you can dig up the past in the beautifully restored Silverton Gaol museum.

All it takes to meet Broken Hill’s many artists is opening the door to any of the city’s 30-plus galleries. These captivating spaces range from the civic splendour of the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery to more intimate offerings that are part of artists’ homes and studios. Each gallery and its artists provide a sense of what makes the city so real, and why so it continues to attract creative people.

Sculptures With A View
Of the many creative initiatives in Broken Hill, one stands out against the landscape with special drama, particularly at sunset. The sculptures within the Living Desert Reserve are a celebration of the region’s powerful connection between art and the environment. Located 9km from the city, the sanctuary features 12 massive sandstone sculptures by artists from around the world as well as local artist, Badger Bates. The sanctuary displays the breathtaking beauty of the real outback. Explore along paths that wind through a tranquil landscape of profound significance to local Aboriginal culture.

Royal Flying Doctor Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is essential to the health and wellbeing of Australians living in 80 percent of the country – an area the size of western Europe. Visit the Bruce Langford Visitor’s Centre at the Broken Hill Airport. Enjoy a guided tour of the base and see the aircraft and people at work. There is also a museum, theatre, and great RFDS merchandise for sale.

School of the Air
This unique institution is an everyday experience for children of the outback. Today, radio communication has mostly given way to email, intranet, and social media over satellite-linked internet, but the education connection between students and their teacher remains the same. The School of the Air classroom in the region covers over a million square kilometres, with a student population of about 80 from outback stations. To listen in on a class, book through the Broken Hill Visitor Information Centre.

Silver City Mint and Art Centre
Home to the world’s largest acrylic painting on canvas (12mx100m) – the Big Picture depicts the landscape around Broken Hill with awe-inspiring vistas viewed from a central platform. The Silver City Mint and Art Centre smelts, casts and manufactures silver jewellery and features a spectacular display of minerals with specimens for sale. View and purchase originals and lithographs from well-known Broken Hill and Australian artists.

White’s Mineral Art and Living Mining Museum
For a sense of going underground without actually going under, visit White’s Museum and take on a journey through the mining history of the city. Bushy White’s mineral artworks are complemented by rare mining artefacts, underground memorabilia, and models of mine sites.

Day Dream Mine Tour
Tour the Day Dream Mine and experience the tough working conditions of a bygone era. Located 33km from Broken Hill near Silverton, the mine enables you to go underground in safety and relative comfort at the same time as getting a sense of the harsh life miners once led.

Miners Memorial
The stark reality of working in Broken Hill’s mines over the ages is writ large on the Miners’ Memorial which lists more than 800 miners who lost their lives on the job. The two small dump trucks nearby are a memorial to the only two miners still entombed. All memorials are sober reminders of why Broken Hill pioneered a culture of trade unionism, including the introduction of the 35-hour working week and the defeat of conscription in Australia.
