Welcome to Free Range Camping e-news

Easter has flown by, and many are now getting ready for winter camping, which for some means the preparations will begin for the migration to the northern parts of the country in search of warmer weather.

In this months newsletter we take a closer look at the small Queensland outback town of Windorah, what to do and where to camp.  We introduce our new ambassadors Keith & Frances who hit the road nearly three years ago are still going, and we look back on one of our more memorable moments of life on the road, in particular how we delayed the departure of the 'Spirit of Tasmania'.

We also check out two great products, Reverse Alert, a revolutionary new braking system for your car, caravan or motorhome, and Gourmet Gardens, a great way to carry herbs with you if you are heading outback or crossing the border.

Plus you will also have a chance to win a fantastic Weber Baby Q valued at $429 .

Sorry for all the e-mails

sorry

We start of with an apology.  On Sunday 10th April it appears that many of our members received multiple emails from our server.  In some instances up to 15.  We apologise for this and can confirm it was definitely not intentional spamming.  It appears our servers went into meltdown and resulted in a loop sending multiple emails.  Some unsubscribed, and we can understand this, but the system kept on looping.  We have now rectified the issue, and apologise once again.   We were going to send out another email to say 'sorry', but thought under the circumstances that might not be such a good idea.  So, for those that were supporting and alerted us to this, we thank you for your understanding.

FRC Update New Search Function

FRC Updates

We have been busy again this month with continued improvements to the FRC site with the latest being some upgrades to the search bar in the main directory. We have now added a function that permits you to search in specific locations and also have the ability for you to save your favorite search criteria so you don’t have to input it each and every time.

There is a link below that will take you to a short video showing how to use the new search bar features.

We would appreciate you giving it try and please let us know how it is working for you.  As usual if you have any feedback or suggestions for us, please feel free to send them in, along with any of your stories or photos that you think may inspire or help other travellers so we can share them on the site.

Town Review Windorah

Stop a while @ Windorah

Just over 1100 km west of Brisbane lies the small country town of Windorah, and it is leading into the perfect time of year to visit this iconic outback town.   It may be small but it is definitely worth putting into your plans and stopping off and exploring the area for a few days.

We were surprised to see how much there is to do at Windorah, and with three places to choose from to park your van or pitch a tent, we thought it was worth a closer look.

Looking for new places to stay?

Just a reminder for anyone looking to beat the crowds or looking for a different experience to check out our Help Out or House Sitting sections.

Help Outs

This section is for anyone requiring a helping hand.  It lets you stay on a property in your own caravan or motorhome in exchange for a few hours of help.  It could be gardening, farm work, cooking or cleaning.   We currently have over 60 listings where people around the country are looking for help and would be more than happy to host you.  It is a great opportunity in some cases to experience life in the outback.

House Sitting

We are also looking for more listings to add to our House Sitting section.  It is free to list, and ideal if you are a property owner that wants to head off and have a FRC member stay and look after your pets or property while you are away.

The added benefit is that they bring their own Caravan or Motorhome so they do not need access to your house unless required.

A Herb Garden for your Caravan

Camping or Travelling, you still want to eat well.  Being full time on the road, we are always looking for quick easy and flavorsome meals to cook.  A few years ago, we discovered Gourmet Garden Herbs & Spices, and they have quickly become a staple in our meals.

They are ideal for travelling, and so easy to use.  We have prepared a few recipes and videos showing just how easy they are to use for Campers and Caravanners, and we also give you the chance to win a Weber Baby Q just by trying them.

How we delayed the departure of the 'Spirit of Tasmania'

We often get asked what life on the road is really like.  And, while it is great, there are still those trying moments we all have.  It is always full of the unexpected and this was one of those days, or two actually where everything went wrong.

In this story we recap how we almost tipped the bus, were saved by Wonder Woman, had a flat battery and fuel leak all in one day.  Then, the very next day we managed to delay the departure of the ‘Spirit of Tasmania’

Stressful at the time, but now we can look back and laugh on it all.

Loving life on the road

cooroy RV stop

We met Keith and Frances after they contacted us following a post we put out searching for volunteers, and recently had the pleasure of spending three days with them camped at the Cooroy RV Stop Over.

We are thrilled they have now joined our team as ambassadors for FRC and will initially be heading west, then south, following the Condamine River.   They will be checking out numerous campsites for us along the way and adding them to the directory.

With the original plan being to work until Keith reached retirement age, a health scare in 2009 bought the decision to travel around Australia forward.  There were some big decisions to make, but they are glad they made them and two and a half years later they are still both loving life on the road.

Keith has been blogging about their adventure, including how they prepared for their big trip, selecting and setting up their rig, and highlights along the way.

To read more about their story you can follow their blog via the link below.
